Visiting Plitvice lakes from Zadar

Plitvice Lakes National Park is located in Croatia’s hilly area, about 1.5 hours’ drive from Zadar.
Plitvice National Park was established in 1949 as Croatia’s first national park. It was included to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 because of the high universal importance of the process of sedimentation of tufa, a kind of limestone, which culminated in the formation of 16 lakes linked by unique travertine waterfalls. The process is ongoing, and the lakes are always altering. The lake system is separated between Higher and Lower lakes; the upper lakes are formed by dolomite layers, while the lower lakes are formed by a limestone canyon.

The Plitvice Lakes National Park has seven alternative paths for simpler touring that range from 2-3 hours to 6-8 hours. It is important to note that it is not permitted to deviate from the specified routes, pedal in the Park, or swim in the lakes. However, you may take a walk along wooden walks, ride in an electric boat across the largest lake, or travel on a tourist train to witness several waterfalls and enjoy the lakes’ stunning blue hue.

One specific waterfall in the Lakes is unlike any other. The tallest waterfall in Croatia, Veliki slap (eng. Great waterfall), is 78 meters high.
Plitvice is also known for its beech and fir forests, which encompass over 80% of the park. Natural, unspoiled forests provide perfect habitat for the most well-known resident, the brown bear (Ursus arctos), as well as other protected species such as wolves and lynxes.
The Lakes are among the most beautiful sites on the planet. Plitvice was included on CNN’s list of the 25 most beautiful sites in the world.

There is a legend built into the history of Plitvice Lakes, telling the tale of the Black Queen who came down from the mountain following a terrible drought and sent wind and thunder finally bringing the rain that eventually resulted in the creation of 16 lakes. Since then, the water flows endlessly, day and night, gently flowing through beautiful lakes.
